Sunday--the last day of our last host week of 2014 began early--very early! Julie and Hugh Bowles were the overnight hosts and were expecting Jan and Kiera and Kiera's family by 9:00 pm. They didn't arrive and at 2:30 am the Bowles lowered the gates to the parking lot.
The Take-Down crew: Jayne, Denise, Terry, the McCartneys, the Martin-Williams, the Nesses and I arrived at 7 and went to work.
The Bowles, and Tasha and Tatiana had to get up so we could strip their beds, and fold the frames and mattresses to send to the next church. Bless Tatiana who didn't know they were moving (they began in the program on Wednesday). When her Mom said "We go to a different church this evening," Tatiana got big tears in her eyes and said "But I like this church!" And we liked her.
Tatina had been enthralled by Evening Host Mark's magic on Saturday night. And on Friday night the Whitens were Evening Hosts and their grandchildren hosted with them. Patty wrote "Our grandchildren enjoyed playing with the four children who were there. Our granddaughter especially hit is off with Tatiana since they're so close in age and they had a fun time together. So much so that as we were getting ready to leave and giving Tatiana a hug, she told Breanna that she wished she could stay and live there with her. What a precious moment that was and I was especially touched that Tatiana used the word "live" rather than "stay" as I thought that indicated how well cared for she felt after being in the church for most of the week."
My heart aches for these children who have to move week after week and see new people each day... THANKS for being so loving and kind to them--it makes a difference, whether they ever express it or not. And they touch our lives in very special ways.
The truck arrived and all the beds and bins were loaded in an assembly-line fashion. The Take Down crew was good! They vacuumed the floor, put things back in the proper places and just generally did everything that was needed. The laundry was sorted into "likes"--all towels in one bag, sheets sets matched and bagged together, etc. Our laundry volunteers do great work--and they are amazing "folders"...everything stacks neatly on the shelves. This week the Sunday laundry volunteers were Zanne Hunt, Sarah Bryan, Jayne Bailey and Denise Horton.
The food was sorted and boxed to take to the Day Center for future meals, much too good to toss. We took Tasha and Tatiana to the Day Center and left the Van at the First Baptist parking lot across the street.
The Day Center Hosts Sheila Marshall and Bert Prestegard arrived at 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Brooking DuPriest came a bit later and helped with a couple who came in looking for a place to stay. Our volunteers got them food from Our Daily Bread, which operates from First Baptist across the street. They provided supplies and some money to help them reach their final destination Charleston. There are so many in need. Those three women touched the lives of this couple passing through Athens.
All three IHN families were at the Day Center with all their things, and I drove the Van and Denise followed me to Watkinsville First United Methodist Church--the next host congregation. We hugged everyone good-bye and passed them into other loving arms.
Thank you to each volunteer from CCI and First Pres this week. YOU make this work and it makes a difference in the lives of these Mothers and their children. Keep them in your prayers.
When all the guests were safely at the next congregation and the Van was parked and locked, Denise and I shared a bottle of wine--and raised our glasses to our wonderful Coordinating Team, the excellent Team that will begin in January 2015 and to the best volunteers ever!!
MARK YOUR CALENDAR, January 11 - 18, 2015...our next IHN Host Week. See you in the Pit!

IHN Saturday, Oct 25, 2014
Saturday is a great day for our guests...and it was especially nice today since all three Moms and children got to sleep a little later. Kiera didn't have to go to work today after all.
Kitty Kellogg and Ed Law made sure everyone was up in time for Daryl Magrino's extra special breakfast! Daryl found out last night that the Fellowship Hall was set up for a wedding reception--so breakfast couldn't be served there. Not to be deterred, he moved a table into the kitchen and the bountiful breakfast was served right there--a fun way to start the day. Daryl prepares a wide variety of delicious things, plus cooks eggs to order for everyone. A real treat for all.
Erik Ness drove the Van and took Jan, Tasha and Tatiana to the Day Center and Kiera and family to her Mother's.
I (Kitty Donnan) was the On-Site/On-Call Coordinator and Robbie Bryan was the "shadow" (though much more) for the new team. Clean sheets were put on the Host Beds, along with mints on the pillows. We walked to First Baptist and got Tasha and Tatiana...everyone else is finding their own ride back to the church by 9:00 pm this evening. Robbie drove us all back to FPC. When we came by the front of the church Tatiana realized there was a bride having her picture made. So after parking and going inside she and Robbie and I went back to see the bride and groom.
And what a beautiful bride--and handsome groom! Debbie was married by her grandfather John Kipp and she was radiant. She was so gracious and gave Tatiana a big hug and told her to enjoy the "candy bar" that was still up from where the reception had been. Robbie ran down and asked Tasha's permission which was given--and Tatiana was thrilled with seeing a real bride plus getting some special candies. She is such an adorable and personable little girl! It is nice to have time with her.
The special Saturday continued with the dinner provided by Paul and Carol Kurtz--they had tons of food because I didn't get the word to them about the two families who decided to stay out til 9:00. They had beautiful roasted chicken, green beans, garlic bread, warm apple slices, grapes and brownie bites. It was appreciated and enjoyed!
Lizz Berstein and Mark Hall, Evening Hosts, brought more treats in addition to their warm personalities. Mark played Fooseball with Tatiana before dinner. Last I looked she was winning. And Mark is quite the magician. He got me to stick my finger into an apparatus with two holes...my finger at the top and a grape at the bottom and --whammo, he cut the grape in half and Tatiana let out a shriek, and I admit to being a bit nervous. He had lots of other tricks up his sleeve and I'm sure they all had a fun evening. I hated to leave.
Julie and Hugh Bowles are the overnight hosts. I hope everyone sleeps well on this last night for our host weeks of 2014. God bless and keep one and all.

IHN, Friday October 24, 2014
Friday morning before sunup found Denise outside the gate of the garage...Kiera, needs to leave by 5:45 am is to open the gate each morning at 5:30 so the early driver can get in. Sleep got the best of her today. Denise reached Overnight Host Elaine Johnson by phone (what did we do without them?) just as Kiera came flying out to open the gate. It was rush, rush to get her family ready and to the Van--Van...where is the van?
A case of miscommunication (mine) to new Van Drivers, who had proven their mettle by being extremely flexible last evening! I told them to leave the van "at the church"--which they did, at the church where they picked it up. Makes perfect sense. Of course what I said was not exactly what I meant. I meant the other church--FPC! Sorry Al and Heidi --don't give up on driving the van with us! And sorry Denise, but of course you managed to get the guests where they needed to be on time.
Denise got Kiera and her three children to her mothers. Then came back and got Tasha and Tatiana and went to the Day Center to wait for the school bus. Then back to FPC and Denise's duty was over, except for getting herself back to First Baptist to get her own car. She just encountered one young drunk along the way...and by that time was certainly wide awake! He went one way and she another, and she was definitely the steadier of the two.
Elaine and Tim Johnson reported a quiet Thursday evening, the kind we like! They made sure Jan and her three children were up and ready for the day this morning.
Tommy Jackson drove the van again and after dropping Jan and family at the Day Center took Tasha for a job interview. Tommy--you took her to an important place, because she was offered a job and will start the training on Monday. Yea!!
The On-Site/On-Call Coordinator was Erik Ness and Paige Oelke was "shadowing" and helping so she will be ready to do this for our next host week in January. They got the beds made, and everything in order for guests and volunteers.
Denise was back for afternoon van driving and got Tasha, who is still suffering from a sore foot/ankle, and Tatiana and took them to the church. Jan's three children are staying with family for the week-end and they won't be returning to FPC.
Denise made a later pickup of Kiera and family. She learned the good news that Kiera does not have to go to work in the morning...know that she and her children will enjoy having a rare later wake up tomorrow morning.
Steve and Patty Whiten were the Evening Hosts, ably assisted by their two grand-children. It is always nice to have youngsters in the volunteer corps. One made a fine foose-ball partner. Bob and Nancy Bostrum brought dinner which was enjoyed by all: Broccoli, chicken and cheese casserole, wild rice, carrots and rolls. Yummy!!
Kitty Kellog and Ed Law are the Overnight Hosts. They can go to sleep dreaming of Daryl's wonderful breakfast tomorrow morning--the highlight of the FPC/CCI Host Week.
It has been a good week so far, with really nice guests and very flexible volunteers. God Bless everyone.

IHN, Thursday Oct 23, 2014
I got to FPC at 5:30 am to do the early shift of Van Driving. Overnight Host Sara Kipp was up and making coffee and greeted me with her usual smile. I got to meet our new guests who arrived last night, Mom Tasha and cute 8 year old daughter Tahtiana. Kiera's little one spent last night with grandmother so just Kievonta and Jarquavious to go with Kiera this morning on the Van--and they were the first stop. The benefit of this time of day is the traffic is sparse to none. We then went to the IHN Day Center to wait for the school bus for Tahtiana, which arrived about 6:30 am...my goodness that's an early start for little kids.
Tasha and I headed back to FPC. Tasha went back to bed (good choice!). She is having trouble walking because of an injured ankle. Thankfully she has a doctor's appointment this afternoon. I had a nice visit with John Kipp before he began his very busy Thursday (at least he didn't have far to go to get to work--just up the steps). Jan and family were still asleep which is as it should be at this time of day.
Sara did the laundry today. Van Driver Chuck Toney arrived to take Jan, Ashley, Don and Madison along with Tasha to the Day Center.
The changes for the day began early this morning...Tasha can't walk, because of her ankle, to take Tahtiana to her after school event as had been planned. Got a message to the afternoon van drivers Al & Heidi Davison. Before they did the first pick up there were two other changes...Kiera doesn't work late tonight after all and will need to be picked up.
Then NO, never mind, Kiera has found a ride for them to FPC.
Susan Thackray is the On-Site/On-Call coordinator for today and got the sheets changed on the Host beds and made sure everything was ready for our guests and the Thursday volunteers.
Tasha's doctor called in meds for her and the Davison's stopped to get them. Well, the pharmacy is
s-l-o-w... They were concerned those waiting in the Pit would be concerned. I tried to let Susan know they would be late arriving, also the meal preparers, and the evening hosts--but had to leave messages for all.
The Davison's first time to drive the van began and ended with things a bit out of the ordinary. Though as someone said "normal" is a setting on a dryer and life isn't like that! Our volunteers continue to demonstrate great flexibility and good cheer for which we are quite grateful.
Megan and Brad Sperr, and of course William, had a Barbecue dinner--always a hit! Our guests do not go hungry.
Margaret Johansen and Tanna Nicholson were the evening hosts. Hearing nothing to the contrary I'm thinking it was a quiet evening. Early mornings mean early to bed also!
The Overnight Hosts are Tim and Elaine Johnson--hope everyone slept well.
Thanks to one and all for the many things you did today. Sweet Dreams, God bless one and all.

Wednesday Oct 22, 2014
Madeline Van Dyck got up in the wee hours of Wednesday morning for van driving duties and drove Kiera and family to Keira's Moms for work and school pick ups and for the Mom to keep little Kemya.
Madeline went back to FPC and joined the other Overnight Host Winston Stephens in the morning routine. Tommy Jackson picked up Jan and her family and drove them to the Day Center where the school bus picks up the three children.
Yesterday Barb Laughlin picked up the laundry from the first half of the week and took them home to wash--an important part of our host week.
In the afternoon Jayne Bailey was once again the van driver for the third day in a row...thanks Jayne. She picked up Jan and family and Keira and family. We had thought Keira was to work late both Wednesday and Thursday evenings--but mid-day learned that she would get off at the regular time today. This week has been full of changes, life is like that. We so appreciate the flexibility of our volunteers.
Denise Horton was the On-Site/On-Call Coordinator and Terry Nestor worked with her. They moved the Host Room from a regular room to the storage closet, since the third family arrived tonight and guests have "first dibs" on the real rooms! Four beds got clean sheets. The storage closet is large and Kim keeps it beautifully, so it is not a bad place to spend the night.
Terry Nestor and Jayne Bailey are the Evening Hosts. The guests preferred to eat in the Pit, so FPC Wed Night Supper food was brought downstairs: Tilapia, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans and there was still delicious Pork Loins and mashed potatoes from last night, which were heated up and as Denise said "Everyone enjoyed the feast". It was topped off by home-made cupcakes baked and decorated for Halloween by Jayne.
Our new guests Tasha and her daughter Tahtiana (age 8) arrived a bit after 8:00 and Terry and Jayne provided Orientation. Regina, the IHN staff person who works with the guests, was also there to talk with her again. Tasha had been for an early evening job interview and that looks promising. Sure hope that will work out well.
John and Sara Kipp are the overnight hosts.
Please say a prayer for all our families and volunteers. Life can present difficult situations for all of us and we never know what others are facing. God bless you one and all

IHN, Tuesday Oct 21, 2014
Tuesday morning got started early with Kiera and her children up, dressed and just about ready to go when I arrived at 5:35 am. Kiera got the children's little backpacks filled with tasty lunch items, thanks to Michelle's good shopping.
Everyone else was still asleep as we turned out the lights and headed to Kiera's Moms. The bonus at this time of day is there is no traffic and the stars are bring, which Kiera's boys enjoyed seeing. Soon I was back at the church to leave the Van, and it was still dark and sleepy in our IHN quarters--yea.
Lynn and Happy were the overnight hosts and made sure Jan and family were ready to go. Richard Lane got them to the Day Center to catch the bus to school right on time.
Terry McRae was on On-Site/On-Call Coordinator for Tuesday and he and daughter Elizabeth came to the Pit about noon and made up the host room beds (Terry gives Elizabeth 90% of the credit, just as a good Dad should do!) Don DeMaria arrived at 4:30 to join Terry and learn more about the way the Coordinating Team works and to help get everything ready for our guests.
Jayne Bailey drove the afternoon van (again). She picked up the Van, and then families and brought everyone back to FPC. Along the way she learned that there was no hot water last night for showers at FPC--uh oh.
Susan Ferguson brought the dinner which got rave reviews. A delicious pork loin, mashed potatoes, salad and cup cakes. Yum!
Ben, Molly and Crawford Brunjes were Evening Hosts. Ben called to tell me the hot water wasn't working (at that point I hadn't talked with Jayne). He said he tried to find the water heater to see if he could get it to work. I did the only thing I knew to do--call Roger Burbage! He told me where the water heater is located, and said he'd get in touch with a plumber tomorrow. BUT...no need, Ben found the water heater while I was on the phone with him giving Roger's directions. Not too long afterward he sent me a text: "the water heater is working again!" Yea Ben--thanks for being so handy! Hope you are teaching Crawford these important skills, well perhaps when he is a bit older. We have the best volunteers. I am sure our guests were thankful, since my only suggestion was to heat water in big pots on the stove upstairs--not quite the same as a nice hot shower.
Madeline Van Dyck and Winston Stephens are the overnight hosts tonight...and I hope all sleep well and it is an uneventful evening.
God bless you one and all.

IHN, Sunday Oct 19 and Monday Oct 20, 2014
The final FPC/CCI IHN Host Week for 2014 began on Sunday. This coincided with the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens. We are proud to be part of this network of congregations helping families in need.
The week started at 1:45 when the Set-Up crew gathered to get The Pit ready for our IHN guests. Frequent Set Up Volunteers Carl Bergmann and Mary Peace helped show the routine to four from 2015-17 Coordinating Team: Jayne Bailey, Robbie Bryan, Terry Nestor and Paige Oelke . (The other two new Coordinating Team members Donna Gerhardt and Don DeMaria were not able to be there) Denise Horton and Kitty Donnan were also part of the crew. I am amazed that two of this crew also ran the AthHalf--Denise and Paige. Are they good or what??
The truck arrived promptly at 2:00 and the beds and bins were rolled off and put into the correct rooms and places. Once again we realize how wonderful it is to have almost everything right in the Pit! It makes set up a breeze. Thanks again to KIM NESS and the YOUTH for being so hospitable, giving us two closets and making us feel welcome.
Beds were made, lamps plugged in, name tags written, windows covered for privacy, rules posted, toys gathered and the set up was complete.
Michelle Clendin-Shaw brought a lot of wonderful food for our guests to have for breakfast, snacks and to make their lunches...a bountiful contribution, which will be enjoyed by all!
Not only is this host week an anniversary...but it is proving to be unlike others in a number of ways. Just reminding us that the # 1 quality for an IHN Volunteer is FLEXIBILITY!
Instead of 5:00 pm the guests arrived at 3:30--but with all the good help we were ready. Emmanuel Episcopal was the IHN host last week and they also hosted the 10th anniversary celebration, so they had a lot going on. Ken Sherman, IHN Executive Director drove the van and delivered the guests.
We were happy to welcome two delightful families: Jan and her children Ashley (14), Don (13) and Madison (11). Keira and her family Kievonta (7), Jarquavious (6) and Kemya (2).
They got settled into their rooms, and the children enjoyed some fruit and some time playing the games in the Pit.
A bit before 5 both families got back into the Van and headed to Emmanuel for the celebration with Denise in the drivers seat. Terry, Jayne and Kitty went in cars and we all sat together. It was a nice program and the room was full of people and good spirits. Lee and her children (Kawani, JR & Zanora), who were guests with us in August were there and it was great to see them again. A shout-out was given to Bert Prestegarde who was the first FPC Coordinator...all by herself. It has taken six of us to do what she did! Thanks Bert for getting us off to a good start.
Terry held Zanora--who celebrated her first birthday with us in August--and soon she had a sleeping girl in her lap. Lee spoke about her experience as an IHN Guest and did a really nice job.
After the program there were refreshments, and all of us enjoyed them. Then we went back to FPC.
Don and Maggie DeMaria were there with many boxes of Pizzas, and a nice salad along with yummy cookies. The fact that we had just had some "refreshments" did not keep anyone from enjoying a delicious dinner! Pizzas hit the spot! And kudos to Don--who ran the AthHalf and Maggie--who was in the cheering crown--and both managed to bring dinner and join the guests in eating and conversation. Thanks for being in such great shape you two.
Steve Thackray and Bruce Miller were the Evening Hosts. Bruce did double duty as he and David Alper were the overnight hosts.
MONDAY morning began early with Denise driving the van at 5:45 am to take Kiera and her children to her Mothers house...where the older two get the bus to school, and the two year old stays with her grandmother, and Kiera gets picked up for her job. Denise took the van back to the church, and David opened the door not only dressed but already with his name tag on!
Richard Lane drove Jan and her family to the Day Center where they took a shower and changed clothes. They didn't realize we have showers at the church...a nice plus for our guest, since they are just across the hall in the Pit. After today they will get dressed at the church and everyone will get to sleep a bit later.
The On-Site/On-Call Coordinator for Monday was Madeline Van Dyck. She was joined by Jayne Bailey. The new coordinators will each be with us one late afternoon to see what this job is about. Together they put clean sheets on the overnight host beds, and mints on their pillows. They made sure everything was ready for the guests.
Then Jayne, another double-duty person, drove the afternoon van to pick up Keira & her family. (Jan and family had a meeting at school and had a ride back to FPC.) Imagine Jayne's surprise when she realized the gas tank was on empty--very empty! This doesn't happen often, but it always makes your heart beat faster when it does and you have a van full of tired children, to say nothing of their Mom who had worked all day. And as happens, no gas station in sight. Jayne made the wise decision to head straight back to the church and unload everyone.
Smith Wilson to the rescue! He and Dianne were the Evening Hosts and he took the Van and got it filled up (he will be reimbursed for the gas--and thanked for the effort!!)
Bertis and Kathryn Downs and family brought the delicious dinner: grilled chicken, vegetables, salad, fruit, bread, cookies and mini-cupcakes. It was a big hit! And I am sure that Jan and family were thrilled to find these things waiting when they returned from their school meeting! Guests never go hungry during our Host Week.
Overnight hosts are Lynn and Happy Dicks. They will make sure the overnight goes well.
ONE MORE THING...we found out today that a third family will join us Wednesday evening. Tasha and her daughter Tahtina (8). We look forward to welcoming them "home" for the rest of the week.
We are grateful to all our volunteers. In the 10th anniversary program there were some comments about what was most helpful to guests while in the IHN program. Some of the responses included:
"Being treated with respect",
"The security of knowing that my kids and I had a stable home",
"Love, kindness, concern, thoughtfulness"
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR GUESTS! We are off to a good start.
Sweet dreams, please remember our guests and volunteers in your prayers.

IHN, Sunday August 10, 2014
When I arrived at FPC this morning not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse (which I hope was outside!) Then Denise arrived and soon Madeline came out of the Host Room thinking we were the little boys up and about...but they were sound asleep. Winston came out and she and Madeline reported a good over-night. When they arrived last night they said the boys were having a great time with David and Ira--using them as the foundation for the building they were constructing out of blocks. What wonderful volunteers we have!
The Take Down crew assembled quickly, Todd, Kim, Anna Marie, Jean, Katie Sue and Bertis. Madeline finally had to wake up Lee and her children. Unfortunately J.R. was sick at his stomach during the night. He was bright eyed this morning. Madeline went to the store to get some meds just in case--always good to have our Parish Nurse on duty!
When we began to roll beds into the hallway J.R. got busy too and helped Katie Sue roll beds--he is an enthusiastic little boy and actually provides good help as well as a lot of smiles!
The truck arrived and everything was waiting...so it was a quick load. Putting away the things that our ours, and sorting the dirty laundry for Sarah and Robbie, Zanne, Marie and Tim and Debbie, cleaning the refrigerator, making sure the Youth Rooms are back in order all went quickly and well because we had such great help. And because we now have storage in the closets right in the Pit!
Madeline, back from the store, drove Lee, Kawani, J.R. and Zanora (ZZ) to the IHN Day Center. All the goodies from the refrigerator were loaded into the van and off they went. Madeline discovered that only half the car seats were in working order and wisely took the non-functional ones into the office. She has seen too many accidents with children going through windshields and windows to let that go by without action--thanks Maddie! Lee got everything put away in the kitchen while Madeline worked on car seats.
The Take Down crew finished and got everything back in its place, and the keys returned to Roger. Great crew means light work!
Maggie and Cynthia were the Day Center hosts this afternoon. Lee's Dad picked up her and the children and they had nice family time--and even got to see their grandfather/great-grandfather. What a treat for him! Lee said she had hoped to get a nap--but guess what, she wasn't able to do that! With a 5, 3 and 1 year old is that a surprise? She doesn't start her new job until Thursday, so hopefully she will get some rest the first of the week when the children are in school and day-care. She had such wonderful things to say about the FPC/CCI volunteers--now that is not a surprise!
I (Kitty) was the van driver and when I got to the Day Center the children had Maggie and Cynthia very engaged. The guests got in the van for a short ride to Emanuel Episcopal and we walked up and up and up to their lovely, newly renovated IHN quarters. Their volunteers immediately were smitten with ZZ and the boys were thrilled with their playground. It will be a good week!
Please keep Lee in your prayers as she begins her new job. One of our volunteers was so impressed with her that he contacted someone he knows who works with the organization and put in a good word for her. And very importantly she is a very good Mom! Keep the children in your prayers...yesterday one of the little boys asked "do we move today?". I thought how much I take living in one place for granted. While moving weekly isn't ideal, the families are provided with a safe, comfortable place to stay and are surrounded by caring people--and get good food, and clean sheets and towels, and are driven to and fro with care. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR A VERY GOOD WEEK. It is not every week that there's a birthday celebrate. The birthday girl's last little bit of cake--and balloons and hats went with her--and the family took wonderful memories of her first birthday.
God bless you one and all. Our next Host Week is OCTOBER 19 - 26th. It is our last one for 2014. Hope to see you then!

IHN, Saturday August 9, 2014
Not quite as early on Saturday morning, Ed and Kitty K made sure Lee's family was up and led them upstairs for a real treat in Fellowship Hall. Breakfast, lovingly prepared by Daryl with help from David. It is an amazing feast and a wonderful gift for the guests and volunteers. Lee said that her boys really ate a lot! And everyone enjoyed it.
Ed extended his volunteer time by driving the van to the IHN Day Center.
Kitty D was the On-Site coordinator and put clean sheets on the host beds. It is such a treat to just walk to the closet and select what is needed instead of having to go through bins! Thanks again Kim and FPC Youth for sharing!
Kitty also was the afternoon Van driver. Lee and the children were ready to roll and all were in good spirits.
David, back again for the third time this week...this time as Evening Host, was waiting when we got to the parking area. We stripped the beds from the second family's room, with the help of Kawami and J.R. to get a head start on Take Down tomorrow. They had fun jumping on the beds--but David and I didn't join in!
Ira, the other Evening Host arrived and immediately hit it off with the children.
Katherine, Bertis, Addie and Eliza brought dinner--Addie's favorite meal. While they were setting up Eliza played games with the boys and the rest of us played "pass the baby" with sweet ZZ, she is a doll and so cuddly.
Ira and David set the table with help from Addie.
Dinner was a lovely pasta with sausage, broccoli, and parmesan--all in separate bowls to suit the taste of all the diners. Also a large bowl of honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon. Everyone filled their plate and dug in with delight. Dessert was ice cream--and there was still a little birthday cake left (before dinner was served that is). One ballon was still holding up nicely. Lee showed me the photos that Jayne had printed and brought to her. It was fun looking at everyone having such fun at the birthday party.
Overnight Hosts are Madeline and Winston. Another good IHN host week is drawing to a close.
God bless you every one!

IHN, Friday August 8, 2014
Bob and Mary made sure Lee and her children were up for the day. The birthday celebration yesterday was a clear success, lots of enjoyment for everyone. Not only did the children all receive books, but the boys got some fun wind-up toys. Zanora, the birthday girl, got a couple of soft toys; one a yellow star that sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" which Lee said the boys sing to her as a calming device! Thanks for your thoughtfulness wonderful volunteers!
Kawami was reported to look so good in his Downtown Academy uniform and was off for his second day of kindergarten. J.R. will be dividing his time between Bright Beginnings and an early childcare education program through Clarke County Schools.
Patty or Steve drove the morning van, and after being Evening Hosts on Monday night I'm sure everyone was glad to be with them again.
The volunteers have found Lee's children to be well-mannered and fun to be around. On Thursday Al enjoyed rousing games of Foozball and then Air Hockey! Lee is a good Mother, dealing with them calmly and lovingly.
Friday's On-Site Coordinator was Denise and she got things ready for the evening. She reported that there was still plenty of delicious looking birthday cake left over (what a great left-over!) and the balloons were still making the place look festive and happy.
Donna and Glenn arrived to be Evening Hosts--and they deserve a special pat on the back for coming this week as they are moving into a new home!
Chuck brought everyone "home" this afternoon in the Van. Our van drivers make the program possible--getting everyone to the right place morning and afternoon.
Terry brought dinner-- hamburgers and french fries which were a big hit! Heidi said last night "...much to our surprise Zanora ate a lot of lasagna, we never thought she would, but boy did she. The boys dined on grapes, glad I brought them as an afterthought." You never know who is going to eat what! Thanks to all our food volunteers for doing such a good job with meals that are tasty, have lots of variety and thought put into them. The guests (& other volunteers) give you high marks.
Tonights Overnight Hosts are Ed and Kitty K They have the bonus of enjoying a Saturday morning special breakfast prepared in the "big kitchen" by Daryl.
GOOD NEWS TO SHARE: One of our guests during the mid-June host week was Lashawn. She took a job at Walgreens while she continued to look for work that better matched her skills. She has received an award for employee of the month! Off to an impressive start. Also she will begin work as a Medical Records manager in October. This is wonderful news!!
Keep all the families in your thoughts and prayers. Your warm, caring welcome to them makes a huge difference in their lives. Good night and God bless you everyone.

IHN, Thursday August 7, 2014
Overnight hosts Sara and John are early risers and made sure Lee and her family were "up and at 'em" this morning.
Tommy was the van driver and had the privilege of taking Kawani for his first day at Downtown Academy. And of course took the others too.
Sara did the laundry--she always does double duty when she spends the night...thanks so much! Every task is important during the host week.
David was the On-Site coordinator. He got fresh linen on the host beds, unlocked the doors and welcomed the volunteers. He said that Kawani had a good first day of kindergarten! Lee had said he was very eager to begin.
What a day this was--first day of kindergarten for Lee's oldest and first birthday for her youngest, Zanora.
Jayne was the afternoon van driver for the fourth day in a row (super!) and I know she was happy to wish Zanora happy first birthday. She's enjoy being around a baby this week!
Carol B and Carol R were the evening hosts. They got everything set up for the birthday celebration!
Heidi and Al brought dinner, wonderful lasagna (which was on the guest wish list) along with delicious bread and tomato and cucumber slices. AND...Birthday Cake and Ice Cream!
The table had a festive birthday cloth and was adorned with birthday hats. Bob and Mary are the overnight hosts and he brought his guitar. There was singing, gifts for all three children--a real joyous birthday evening! All the children received books.
Carol took some great photos but I am not clever enough to include them here. :(
Imagine a precious, pretty little face with icing all over it: forehead, nose, cheeks, chin and of course around her mouth! As David said "she enjoyed her birthday with all her senses".
What a treat for Lee and her family and our volunteers to celebrate together. About a year ago we had a birthday cake for a boy who was about 11. As we were lighting the candles his older brother and mother were in the kitchen and said it was the first time they'd had a birthday cake in five years! We take so much for granted. THANKS to all who made Zanora's first birthday fun and happy for her, her Mother and her two older brothers. I hope all her birthdays are at least this happy and filled with this much love and caring.
Sweet dream, God bless one and all.

IHN, Wednesday August 6. 2014
Forrest and Elaine got our guests up and moving this morning to face a hot day in Georgia. We are grateful to have a college boy give a night to help IHN--and his Mom too of course.
Chuck drove the van and got all where they needed to be when they needed to be there.
Madeline was the On-Site Coordinator and was at the church to make sure all was going to be ready for our guests arrival. Always busy, she also had a Red Cross representative to meet with about future plans. Not only is Madeline our IHN Overnight Host Coordinator she is our Parish Nurse--and much more. While she was meeting dear Sara beat her to the draw and made the Host beds--thanks Sara!
Jayne was once again the afternoon van driver and I know Lee and family were delighted to see her smiling face again!
Terry and Margaret were the Evening Hosts and provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the evening and the nice dinner. Terry read board books to the boys and they read along with her multiple times. All three children had fun making animal sounds inspired by a Mo Willems book. Margaret took photos of a peaceful, restful ZZ when she fell asleep on the beanbag--tomorrow is her first birthday!
Meal preparers Rhea and Jessica decided an "end of summer picnic" was in order. They had chicken fingers, mac and cheese, baked beans, tomato and cucumber salad, applesauce, and ice cream bars and jello. Sounds delightful and know it was very good! We have the best food preparers.
As the evening wound down John and Sara were there to spend the night. Hope everyone sleeps well. Thanks to each of you for what you do for our guests--it makes such a difference in their lives. Your kindness and effort is not forgotten.

IHN, Tuesday August 5, 2014
Julie and Hugh were troopers as the Overnight Hosts. Alequia had a late work night and early morning arrival back to FPC--and they let her in at "oh dark thirty". Thanks to our volunteers for doing whatever it takes to make things go well.
Richard once again drove the van and got everyone to either Bright Beginnings or the IHN Day Center. Thanks for driving again today!
VERY GOOD NEWS -- Lee has a full time job (unfortunately without benefits). She is very excited and will begin on Monday August 11. Yea! Keep her in your prayers, as a new job is always daunting.
Denise went by the church and put a lamp in the Women's restroom. Yes, there are lights in there. But the master controls turn the lights off at 10 pm and the overnight hosts then have to go to the hall and press the reset button. If someone is "caught" in the restroom at 10 pm it is a bit of a shock and very dark!
A CHANGE - As of today Alequia and her children are no longer in the program. We wish them well and ask that everyone keep her and her children in their prayers.
Susan is the On-Site Coordinator for Tuesday. She put clean sheets on the host beds, made sure everything was in order and ready to welcome our guests.
Jayne delivered the guests on her second afternoon in a row of van driving. She's reported being happy to get a "baby fix". The three children are precious!
Ann and Tanna were the Evening Hosts. They got the table set and the food ready to serve. And were the genial hosts for the meal and afterwards.
Jeannie and Roger brought tonights meal -- and what a meal it was! Pulled pork (with a special super secret recipe) and buns for those who prefer sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad and after all that--apple pie and ice cream!
Elaine spent the night, along with Forest, who came from his job as a golf pro. Hope you both have sweet dreams.
Thanks to all the hard-working volunteers from dawn to dark today. May God bless one and all.

IHN, Monday August 4, 2014
Monday got off to a good start as Bruce and David made sure everyone was up and ready to face the day. It was a quiet night, just what we like.
Richard drove the morning Van with everyone aboard as Alequia's car is out of commission. Arrangements were made to have it taken care of--but by the end of the day no news on when it might be back in service.
Richard dropped children at Bright Beginnings and the Moms at the IHN Day Center. Lee had a job interview and things look good for employment for her. Keep her in your prayers that this will be a success.
Denise picked up Alequia and family in the Van and took the children to the baby sitters and Alequia to work for a 3- 11 pm shift. Arrangements have been made for a taxi to pick them up and take them to FPC...when the overnight hosts will welcome them in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. We have extra special volunteers who arise to any situation!
Terry was the On-site coordinator and got everything ready for the guests--with the able help of Sissy who put clean linens on the beds! It is clear Terry needs more training in that department, though he has delegation down pat. :)
Molly and William and Ethelyn brought the evening meal. There were Chick Filet nuggets and strips, a pizza, a salad, lemonade and ice cream sandwiches--yummy! The children, actually everyone, was delighted with tonight's fare. Thanks to everyone who provides food.
Jayne, the Afternoon Van Driver brought Lee and her family back to FPC. There is a little more conversation in the afternoons than during the still-sleepy mornings. Both Van drivers will be back on duty again tomorrow, for which we are grateful.
Patty and Steve were Evening Hosts and brought along their grandchild and a friend. What a treat for the guest children again--to have young folks to play with!! We are thankful for families who introduce children and grandchildren early to community service and caring for and sharing with others. There are few lessons better!
Julie and Hugh are the overnight hosts. I hope they get to sleep early as their sleep will be interrupted. By the way David and Bruce gave a thumbs up to the double mattresses on the host beds...hope others feel the same.
Please keep the families and the volunteers in your prayers this week. Our lives are touched by others, and we find that in serving we are served. Thanks be to God.

IHN, Sunday August 3, 2014
Our fourth IHN Host week in 2014 got underway this afternoon without a hitch--thanks to so many great volunteers!
The set up crew: Denise, Carl, Kitty L, Mary P and Kitty D found a much easier situation, with all the IHN things already in the Pit. Kim and the youth have generously offered their closet space for us to store the IHN Linens and other things. We are grateful!! It is much better than hauling everything back and forth and back again to the storage space. It is great use of space that was empty.
Jim and Judy came to pick up the blue bedspreads that go from church to church to church. While waiting for the truck to arrive, they helped sort some things in the kitchen, and then helped move the beds and bins in. They then took spreads to a laundromat with really large machines, washed, dried and folded them and brought them back to FPC--only to discover the doors into the lowest level (& all the others) were locked! We were inside getting them ready and didn't hear their frantic knocking. THANKS for being persistent, and sending a text--and bringing back clean bedspreads.
The set up crew got the truck unloaded, beds into the rooms, and huge and heavy bins belonging to each family into the proper bedrooms. Beds were made--and Carl showed his prowess in making beds, after he had done every possible thing that needed doing before relenting and making beds. He actually made the same bed three times--oops that wasn't his fault and he may never make another bed!
Because of the warm weather we didn't put blankets on the beds, but put one blanket per person in each room--just in case! In looking through the blankets we discovered a gorgeous afghan donated by Barbara--what a lovely gift for our IHN host week. Thank you!
In addition to beds being made food was stored in the kitchen. Thanks to Michelle and Susan B for bringing such nice things for the guests' breakfast and to make lunches. Everything looks great and will be enjoyed.
Then Denise, Kitty L and Mary sorted and arranged all the linens that belong to FPC in the closet--and it all fit beautifully! How delightful it will be for the next host week, just to open the closet door, instead of going through bins!
Evening hosts Steve and Larry arrived--carrying bags of spreads from in front of the door and then helped get them on the beds. So nice to have everything clean and fresh for our families and volunteers.
About the time we were wondering where the guests could be--it isn't but a couple of blocks to the Day Center--in walked a volunteer from Holy Cross Lutheran, very relieved to find us in the Pit. The last time she had been at FPC, IHN was upstairs in Sunday School rooms and they had been wandering all over an empty and quiet building (I'm sure they were wondering what they were going to do with 8 people tonight!) The DeMarias who were there with dinner rescued her and all was well.
The other Holy Cross volunteer brought the IHN Van down to the parking lot near the Pit and everyone unloaded. We have two families. LEE has three children: Kawani who is 5 and he begins kindergarten at Downtown Academy on Thursday. J.R. is three and Zanora will celebrate her first birthday on Thursday. They both go to Bright Beginnings.
ALEQUIA (Ah-lake-ee-ah) also has three children: John is 5, Qeenasia is 4 and Joseph is 2. Alequia has a car but unfortunately it broke down at Holy Cross so she and her family will also be using the van until the car is repaired which they hope will be soon. She works full time and doesn't know her schedule until the day before. VAN DRIVERS--Erik and/or I will keep you posted on who will be riding the van when! Check your email for info as we know it.
OVERNIGHT HOSTS, sometimes Alequia works a late shift which means she could get back to the church early in the morning. Madeline and/or I will let you know. Alequia arranges her own child care. MEAL PREPARATION volunteers -- Her schedule will also make a difference in how many will be at dinner. Terry and/or I will let you know as soon as we know.
THANKS to all of you for being flexible. Things seem to change often daily. That's life!
Steve and his Dad Larry were Evening Hosts. The children seemed to love having a "grandfather" to talk with them! Larry said he had six children and this night brought back lots of good memories. He said he was so glad he got to be with "so many of God's children". What wonderful volunteers we have.
Melinda and Don and Maggie and Cate prepared the delicious dinner...right on the spot in the main kitchen. They had a Mexican feast--with Quesadillas, Tacos and all the fixings--yum! They also had some apple sauce for the children along with everything else and Matt and Natalie provided a lovely fruit salad, along with milk and lemonade and everyone's favorites--cookies! No one goes hungry during the FPC/CCI host week. They all dug in and seemed to enjoy every bite.
Denise went to the store and got needed ointments for diaper rash and said when she returned the evening hosts and meal preparers were talking with the Moms and the children were enjoying playing together. Our guest children always love having volunteer children--it is a real treat! Queenasia enjoyed being up in the "big kitchen" and watching the cooking going on, especially since she was with two "big girls"--she is one of only two girls with the six children, and the other girl is one!
When we were giving the orientation, showing Lee and Alequia where the bathrooms and showers are, and the outside courtyard area where they can enjoy green grass--they were thrilled that A. the bathrooms and showers are so close and B. they can sit outside and the children can enjoy the pretty area. The children were also having fun playing with balls.
David and Bruce are the Overnight Hosts and they were settled in for the evening. Our Host Room this time, since we only have two families, is in the Sr High Room--a real room! The other three host weeks in 2014 the host room has been in the Storage Room, which works but a "real room" is probably more like the Ritz! In attempting to make the beds as comfortable as possible, we put double mattresses on the two Host Beds. Along with the memory foam. Let us know how that sleeps.
Everything got off to a good start. The families are delightful, two lovely, caring Moms and six cute, lively, affectionate children! Before I had taken four steps in the parking area I got hugs from two adorable little boys--what fun!
Thank you to everyone who worked today, brought things, gave of your time and talent to make this week better for our neighbors in need. We are blessed to have a nice facility we can share and so many people who give a warm welcome and provide delicious food and a safe place to be. While it is not home--we hope that our guests feel cared for and loved while they are with us.
Sweet dreams one and all--it's going to be a good week!

IHN, Sunday June 15, 2014
Today is our last day for this host week. All has gone well because we have had such wonderful guest and marvelous volunteers--great combination!
Bright and early this Sunday morning Bruce and David were up and stripping their beds, and LaShawn was getting her things together when we arrived. We sent Bruce and David to their respective homes right away because Bruce was still a bit under the weather and David had been there since 4:45 Saturday afternoon and a 14+ hour stint seemed enough!
Our new Interim Youth Director is off to a great start. Kim thought the Youth would enjoy the involvement with IHN and they were the take-down crew, along with some parents...Happy Fathers Day! Maggie and Don, Elizabeth, Georgia Blue and Robert with Paige and Robert, Ben, Kate and Kim and Cov joined Denise and me and things went like clock work. Nice post on Facebook too.
Laundry was divided into four bags and Denise took one home to wash, and the others were put in the Children's Ministry kitchen to be picked up by Debra, Zanne, Marie and Tim. It will come back fresh and clean at their convenience.
The IHN beds and bin with blue bedspreads were rolled to the hallway near the loading dock along with the other things that have waited by the Coke machine. We then waited for the IHN truck to arrive to pick up everything and we worked on the things that stay at the church.
The First Pres things were sorted and most was taken to the storage area, where there is a nice place to put it all. Dishes and silverware were taken to the big kitchen. LaShawn packed some things from the refrigerator to take to the Day Center for her family to eat. We try to let nothing go to waste.
Georgia Blue enjoyed seeing Autumn again and it was reciprocated! And Christian enjoyed playing outside with the kids. Great for everyone to have the youth there.
**I had a chance to talk with LaShawn. She said how comfortable everyone had made all of them feel. She said the fact that people were willing to give their time and to cook and bring food for them, and to stay with them was such a kind thing. She said it was very motivating to interact with such caring people and it meant a lot to her as a Mother when the volunteers were so nice with her children and so considerate of her. **
The truck came and everything was loaded with very little room to spare. Denise took LaShawn, Christian and Autumn to the Day Center. We sent along a pair of shoes and some small things Amber had left in her room for her to pick up.
The Pit was back in order, things were properly stored and we will be ready for our next Host Week.
I was the afternoon Day Center Host and had it all to myself. LaShawn had taken her family to the park when I arrived and they didn't return until not long before they were to leave. LaShawn and Christian reported a wonderful time. Autumn was sound asleep in her carrier so she must have had fun too! They had enjoyed the pool and being out of doors on this pretty day. I love the fact that in the Van LaShawn always sits between her two lovely children...she is a very loving Mother. Her children's behavior reflects her love and appropriate discipline. Such a nice family.
Keith came to drive the family to the next church, Watkinsville First United Methodist and they all loaded up after good-byes. Autumn was still sleepy. Suspect they will all sleep well tonight. Lisa was headed to Watkinsville to pick up Keith--it's a bit further than walking back to the car from First Baptist or Emmanuel. Thanks to you two--you deserve volunteer stars since you also prepared and served refreshments in the Atrium today!! You are appreciated...
...as is everyone else. Thanks to all of you for ALL you did this week during the First Pres/CCI hosting. LaShawn's words ** reflect your goodness. Your efforts make a real difference.
Hope you will join us again when we host next--it's not too far off. We will be welcoming families on August 3 -10 -- seven weeks from today. Please mark your calendar and know that what you do for IHN matters.

IHN, Saturday June 14, 2014
We had to cancel the highlight of our IHN Host week this Saturday--Darryl's breakfast. Darryl & David & often Jane come to the church on Saturday morning and cook a fabulous feast for our guests, for which the lucky overnight hosts are also grateful.
But this Saturday LaShawn had an early morning job interview and Amber left bright and early for her 12 hour shift. It was worth missing breakfast, as LaShawn was hired on the spot--not surprisingly. She said it isn't a "forever job" but will give her work and some money so she can do things with her children, while she continues to search for a job that better uses her qualifications. She is very pleased.
Erik drove the van again and got LaShawn and her family to the Day Center, the IHN staff had arranged for a baby sitter for Christian and Autumn while their Mom went for the interview.
I was the on-site coordinator and drove the afternoon van. I was able to get a few things done for our take-down on Sunday too, after the beds were made and the table set.
David and Ira were there to greet us when we returned to FPC. Soon Heidi and Al arrived with a delicious meal with lots of fresh food...roasted carrots, mashed potatoes just cooked, chicken with sage, and applesauce especially for Autumn (& anyone else). And to top off all that--a chocolate cake--wow! They also stayed and had a meal and conversation with LaShawn and her family, David and Ira. A good evening. Heidi brought some useful things to donate for our IHN host weeks for which we are appreciative.
Amber came by this evening and picked up a few things she had left. She officially moved out of the program and into her own place! Friday was her last night. It is an exciting time for she and Tristan, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they move along in life's journey.
David did yeoman's volunteer duty...staying on as the overnight host. He was joined by Bruce, both have a lot of experience. Bruce wasn't feeling 100%, but we had no success in finding a substitute on short notice and so he came and spent the night. THANKS to both of you for going over and above for our IHN guests!!

Friday June 13, 2014
It's Friday already! This morning Amber made another very early start to get to work on time--good for her!
A little later Mary and Bob made sure LaShawn and family were ready for the 7:30 van departure. Patty and Steve were the van drivers (or at least one of them was!)
Denise was the On-Site coordinator...soon to be a recipient of a gold star for being there for the 5th day out of the last 6! And she'll be back Sunday morning bright and early. Yea Denise--setter up, curtain hanger, cook, coordinator extraordinare!
Erik drove the van this afternoon...and will again in the morning and yet again on Sunday morning. Do we have good folks or what?
Dinner was provided by Susan--and she knows the way to guests hearts--cheeseburgers!
Paige, Robert and their fabulous family were the evening hosts. Autumn enjoyed watching "Finding Nemo" with Georgia B. Yesterday at Day Camp Christian's favorite activity was computers--missed finding out about today's favorite thing! Great kids.
Kitty K (we have 3 Kitty IHN volunteers this week!) and Ed are Friday overnight hosts. They welcomed Amber back from work and rustled up a late dinner for her! They missed seeing adorable Tristan's great smile, he is spending Father's Day with his Dad.
Thanks to all of you who made it a good day from morning to night. God bless everyone.
P.S. More good news Lynn found her keys with orange/white !

It's a rainy Thursday evening in Georgia. The morning started off with John and Sara getting everyone up and moving. Amber didn't have to go to work again today so everyone could sleep a bit longer--since no one was leaving at 5:45 am--which is 0 dark thirty to me!
The van left at 7:30. Steve was the driver this morning--again--we've had three double-days volunteers in a row-- THANK YOU ALL! The van took Tristan and Autumn to Bright Beginnings and then Christian to Rocksprings Community Center and Park for Summer Day Camp and then took Moms Amber and LaShawn to the IHN Day Center.
Sara did the laundry today. The next laundry duty will be on Sunday.
Erik was the On-Site Coordinator today and he unlocked the Pit, changed the sheets on the Host Room beds and set the table as he got ready to welcome volunteers and guests alike this evening. Denise came by to "reinstall" the curtain (aka a sheet) on the large window in a guest room. The night light is on just outside in the courtyard and the curtain has fallen down twice. She made sure it was stuck!
I went by to look for Lynn's key...which she lost when they were overnight hosts on Tuesday night. We hoped they would be under a host bed, but they were not. HAVE ANY OF YOU WHO WERE THERE WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY SEEN A KEY ON AN ORANGE/WHITE FLOTATION TYPE KEY CHAIN?? We are hoping perhaps someone turned it in to Judy. Let me (Kitty D.) know please if you've seen it.
Chuck was the afternoon van driver--his first time and of course he did a great job! He reported liking it and said he was "hooked, line and sinker"...so we will look forward to him driving in the future. Thanks for stepping up Chuck!
Tanna and Ann were evening hosts. Lisa and Paige brought a wonderful looking meal: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, apple sauce and cookies. THANKS to you two and all who are such marvelous meal providers!
Denise and I went down the street to First Baptist for the monthly IHN Coordinators meeting with the IHN Staff and all the coordinators from other churches. We learned the good news that Amber and Tristan will move into their own apartment on Monday morning...exciting! Also LaShawn was called back for a second interview for a job.
Tonight's overnight hosts are Bob and Mary who celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary yesterday...they have been overnight hosts since IHN began! Congratulations--and gratitude to Mary and Bob.
I hope everyone sleeps well, stays dry and has a good rest of the week. God bless you one and all.

IHN, Wednesday June 11, 2014
Lynn and Happy made sure both families were up and ready to leave at 7:30. Patty and Steve were the van drivers this morning and got everyone to the right place at the right time.
Susan was the on-site coordinator for Wednesday and she was at the church to open doors and get the host sheets changed and to welcome the volunteers! Denise joined her as she and Kitty L. were there with the evening meal.
Diane and Smith were Evening Hosts. Rod drove the van again this afternoon and brought our guests to the church. All enjoyed spaghetti and meatballs with all the good things that go along with that. Never have to worry about going hungry during a Host Week--and such good food.
Also count on some fun! I heard from Donna today how much they enjoyed LaShawn's family Monday evening...and how much fun Glenn had playing foos (sp??) ball with Christian, and air hockey too. Donna was amazed in looking at books with little Autumn how well she already knew her colors and numbers. Their involvement also gives Mom a bit of a break to catch her breath.
Sara and John are the Overnight Hosts tonight...and John won't have far to go to get to work in the morning...just up a flight of stairs!
Hope everyone sleeps well. Thanks for the time you spend in supporting IHN. You make a difference in the lives of others. Good night and God bless!

IHN Tuesday June 10, 2014
Amber and Tristan got off very early this Tuesday morning...I suspect she is looking forward to Wednesday morning when she can sleep in! She works four 12 hour shifts, and so has a few mornings that can start a bit later.
Barbara and Bonnie said all was quiet and well overnight. Richard arrived for his second morning to drive the Van...volunteers who do more than one day are a huge help--thanks! Everyone was taken to the correct place.
Barb came by mid-morning and picked up all the dirty laundry to take home and wash. Having people willing to do it a couple of times during the week makes the loads manageable for those who signed up to get the laundry the last Sunday.
Terry arrived at First Pres to open up, put clean sheets on the Host beds and make sure all was in order. Making beds is his specialty--a skill he has learned from being an IHN Coordinator. ;)
Rod delivered the van with LaShawn, Christian and Amber back to their home with us for the week...such a treat to have them. They have stolen lots of hearts already.
Joe arrived to be an Evening Host, and was soon followed by Carol. Cynthia and Paula Frances provided a delicious sounding dinner: Baked Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans and Biscuits, along with cookies for dessert. Once again, everyone will eat well tonight.
Lynn and Happy are the Overnight Hosts. Thanks to all the volunteers in all capacities for making the day, and week, go well. We are blessed to be able to interact with such nice people.
Until tomorrow...sweet dreams...God bless you one and all.

IHN Monday June 9, 2014
The day got off to a very early start with Amber and Tristan leaving at 5:45 am to go to childcare and then to Amber's 12 hour work shift. She does this four days a week (Mon, Tues, Fri and Sat)
Elaine and Tim made sure LaShawn and her family were up and ready to go. Richard left with the van at 7:30 am. Elaine said Autumn enjoyed being read to last night. If anyone has children's books to add to our collection that would be great.
The Evening Hosts, Donna and Glenn arrived early and did so many helpful things before the guests arrived. After they arrived Glenn put back up part of the "curtain" in LaShawn's room, so they aren't bothered by the night light in the courtyard.
Judy drove the afternoon van and did double duty by bringing part of the evening meal. Christian was enthusiastic about his first day at Rocksprings Summer Day Camp. He said his favorite thing was Arts and Crafts. He is such a cute young man--and so polite and nice! Takes after his wonderful Mom I guess! They are a delightful family.
Donna and Glenn set the table and Ethelyn brought Pizza and Chick Fil A chicken nuggets, and chicken strips to go with Judy's large lovely salad and ice cream sandwiches. Christian was particularly excited about the Pizza! There was enough food to make meals for tomorrow also.
Barbara and Bonnie are the overnight hosts and will welcome Amber and Tristan back about 9 pm.
The BIG NEWS is that family # 3, that we anticipated arriving on the van, never came to the IHN Office today...that happens sometime. So it appears we will have two families all week...and they are two nice families indeed.
Thanks to all who made this day successful for our guests--you are all appreciated!
God Bless You and God Bless Amber, LaShawn and their children.

IHN, Sunday June 8, 2014
On this lovely Sunday afternoon our IHN host week got off to a good start. The-set up crew arrived early with Carla, Carl, Glenn G, Gail, Denise and Kitty transforming the Pit from Youth area to IHN home!
The truck arrived and was unloaded in record time--great crew. Judy and Jim picked up the blue bedspreads and were off for an afternoon at a laundromat to have fresh bedding for our guests and volunteers.
Michelle brought bags of breakfast and lunch food for the week--all the things the guests requested, fruit cups, cereals, frozen waffles, juices, apples, oranges, bananas, sandwich makings with turkey, cheese and ham.
Beds were set up and made up, dinner tables were arranged. Judy and Jim returned with blue bedspreads neatly folded, and still warm from the dryers! They said they made new friends at the laundromat while doing good work. They helped put the spreads on the beds, and organize the kitchen.
Gretchen brought a toaster oven to leave for our IHN weeks in the Pit--a wonderful contribution!
Soon the truck arrived from Emanuel and Matt (their coordinator) reported a great week with two delightful families.
We were happy to welcome Amber and Tristan back, and see how much Tristan has grown--but with the same cute smile. Lashawn, Christian and Autumn were introduced all around, and were shown their room and all got settled in. Denise and Kitty did orientation as the evening volunteers were getting ready for a feast.
Terry N. and Jessica are the evening hosts and set the table as Bob and Nancy brought a delicious looking dinner--chicken enchiladas, green beans, salad, rolls, a very impressive flan surrounded with fresh strawberries. Everyone will eat well tonight--delicious home cooking.
Elaine and Tim arrived to be the overnight hosts, and all is well. Only a short two weeks ago she was in Honduras with 14 others on an FPC Mission Trip.
We expect a third family to join us tomorrow night, and look forward to welcoming them. Please keep the families and volunteers in your prayers this week.
Sweet dreams one and all!

IHN, Wednesday March 26, 2014
Bob and Mary gave the wake up signal and the day was off to a good start. The gate was opened and door unlocked. Keith was the morning van driver and made all the appointed stops right on time.
Carol was the afternoon van driver and a bright orange cone saved a place in the covered parking area. Sorry to FPC members who found the garage full, we also saved a place for Amber so she and Tristan would be "close to home" when they parked.
Kitty was the On Site coordinator and changed the sheets and set the table--oops that was dumb--tonight the guests eat at the Wednesday night supper in Fellowship Hall. So the table was un-set!
Terry as an evening host came early to check out the new digs and then returned about the time the guests arrived. Joe and Lois were there as the other evening hosts. It was nice to have three tonight to shepherd all the little ones, the big brother and the parents up to Fellowship Hall.
The children had some play time after dinner. Then Amber and Tristan turned in early. By 7:15 Clarice and Wilbert along with their youngest ones, Ezekial, Isaiah and Jeremiah turned in early as well.
Terry enjoyed reading a chapter book with Sean Maurice and I'm sure he enjoyed it too! He is a good big brother and is often called on to help out with his little brothers, so it is nice when he can have some special attention and time. We need to start a collection of children's books for our host weeks; thanks Terry for this recommendation.
Lois enjoyed playing with Samantha on the floor. And Samantha seemed delighted! All and all a good evening.
John and Sara were the overnight hosts and found a quiet pit when they arrived from choir practice. Hope everyone had a peaceful sleep and pleasant dreams. God bless one and all.

IHN, Tuesday March 25, 2014
Hugh and Julie made sure all the guests were up and ready to roll. They reported a quiet night--just the kind we like!
Julie doing double-duty also drove the morning van. The afternoon van driver was Bill Flatt, and as always he did his duty well. Unfortunately a guest wasn't where he was expected...but all's well that ends well and everyone ended up back at FPC.
Madeline was the On-Site Coordinator and she put fresh sheets on the host beds, unlocked the doors and welcomed the first volunteers and guests home to First Pres. She also brought along her house guest from Mexico and Omar entertained (and was entertained by) the children with his drawing talent! What a treat. He stayed for the delicious meal and enjoyed the families very much. Too bad he doesn't live in Athens...we'd like to have him with us more often.
Patty and Steve were evening hosts and Steve was also a van scout. We are always grateful for our volunteers who do whatever it takes to make the day and night go well. They visited with the families and made sure all went smoothly.
The delicious dinner was thanks to Greta and Margaret with thanks to Julie for delivery. They prepared a wonderful Chicken Tetrazini with Fruit, Bread, a Green Salad, Tea and to top it all off--chocolate cake! YUM! They were also thoughtful to bring ginger ale for Carissa whose pregnancy makes ginger ale a welcome drink.
The overnight hosts were Mary and Bob who added the Pit to places in the church they have slept since IHN first began. They reported "low sugar" and that was re-supplied Wednesday.
Thanks to all who made Tuesday a good time, and educational in many respects. It seems we all learn something new every day. Thanks to Roger for taking many follow-up calls! So far the Pit seems to be working out just fine. We will be asking for feedback from all involved at the end of the week.

IHN, Monday March 24, 2014
Madeline and Bert got everyone up and ready for the day. After all left, they turned out lights, secured the door and were on their way.
Patty and Steve were the morning van drivers and got everyone to the right place at the right time. Clarice took their youngest children in their car, Amber also drove her own car. No'el with Samantha and Wilbert with Sean Maurice went on the van.
Bill was the afternoon van driver, and picked up everyone for the ride home. Denise was the Monday on-site coordinator and was there to welcome volunteers and guests back to First Pres. She had been there earlier in the day to talk with Roger about increasing the temperature in Amber's room so she and Tristan would be more comfortable. She also put a sign on the door to the loading dock--it should only be used in case of emergencies.
The evening hosts were Margaret and Susan (subbing for Steve). Bob and Nancy brought a yummy looking meal of macaroni and beef casserole, green beans, and a wonderful strawberry shortcake. Our guests eat well, for which they are grateful.
The evening went well. Julie and Hugh arrived for the overnight. The Van will leave a bit earlier to make sure all are on time...they will leave at 7:20 instead of 7:30. The door should be open for the van driver at 7:00 am. Tuesday morning will not be a problem, as Julie is both the overnight host and the van driver for the next morning!
THANKS to all Monday volunteers for jobs well done.

IHN, Sunday March 23, 2014
It is a big day. The First Presbyterian IHN Host week moves to the Youth Ministry area--also known as the PIT! Everything is close by, showers across the hall, loading dock just a few steps away, storage close at hand. Thanks to Adrian and the youth for sharing their wonderful space during our host weeks! If all goes well this will be the permanent location.
Rick, Carl, Carla, Denise & Kitty D arrive at 1 pm to move all the FPC-IHN things to the lowest level from the "under the porch" storage area next to the Children's Ministry Suite. There is more than one might think. Thanks to Misse, Judy, Elaine, Richard and all the others we inconvenienced for sharing "your" space with us for so long.
At 2 pm Mary and Gail arrived and the serious set up began. It was a learning experience for all of us, to see what fit where and how best to arrange things. We are all pleased with the size of the guest rooms, and the nice furniture--that nicely stays in the rooms! No more serious moving--yea. We packed up Youth books and materials and marked them and stored them in a nearby closet until Sunday (or when Adrian needs them before). The sofas and comfy chairs stayed in place.
The IHN truck delivered beds and belongings right on time. No more bumping up and down steps. Fortunately David, Ira and Michael arrive just before the truck to get the lay of the land for their Sat night duties, and they are pressed into service to roll beds into rooms, and get the belongings to the right families. With so much good help it went very quickly and we could give the CCI guys a tour. We are so happy to have CCI as our partner congregation.
Lots got done in addition to setting up the guest rooms, and making the storage room livable as our Host Room. It is amazing how comfortable a storage room can be -- if not quite the Ritz!
ALL the First Pres linens and pillows got marked "1st Pres" so church things are not not mixed in with the IHN things (which we stored near the coke machine to return on the truck on next Sunday). Mary and Gail inventoried the IHN boxes, and put like items together. A big job that is much easier to do before the guests arrive and first-day hubbub begins.
Marking was a big job--and Rick and Carla --the markers --discovered it is easier to write on paper than blankets. But since they were both IHN coordinators alone for two years each, those two can do anything! Our team of six has wanted to do this for the last year...the move to the Pit got us off the dime.
Mary also made name tags for the week's volunteers. Carl moved a lot of stuff! We have our new storage area set up and ready to use, and the boxes that will be refilled are there. The Set up crew, with the extra duties, was finished a bit before 4 pm--thanks for a BIG job well done! It won't be this way every time...so please sign up again.
Dishes, utensils, glasses, etc were moved from upstairs for the week. We have new place mats to use instead of table cloths (which have to be washed and ironed--instead of wiped off) and set the two tables with them for the first time.
Susan and Will arrived with the evening meal as well as diapers and wipes. What generous volunteers we have! They helped finish some last minute setting up.
Michelle left fabulous food for breakfast, lunches-to-pack, and snacks. It was great to see the children eating fresh fruit! We try to have only healthy food.
The Van arrived from Emanuel Episcopal. The guests seem delighted with their space for the week. We have a full house. Four adults and six children: Clarice, Wilbert and their four cute boys, Sean Maurice age 9, Ezekiel age 3, Isaiah who will be 2 on Sunday, and Jeremiah age 1. No'el and darling Samantha age 2. Amber and precious 6 month old Tristan.
They got settled in their rooms and we had an orientation to the space and rules. Two families have cars, and they moved those to the covered parking space off College Avenue, right at the Pit. I moved the IHN van there also. A cone will be set for the Van on Wed night.
Carol, the other evening host arrived and immediately helped with the children. So nice to have so many loving hands for these active little ones.
Susan's dinner was a big hit. Baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with cheese, and strawberry shortcake with whipped cream--yum.
Madeline and Bert arrived for their Overnight Host duty. Madeline and Carol did a check of all the outside doors of FPC, to make sure all was secure. When the Evening Hosts left, the parking gate was then closed for the night.
There was good conversation around the tables...and Madeline made a list of food the guests would enjoy (good idea Madeline!) Terry will be sharing that with the meal prep volunteers to see if some things could be incorporated. We will try to do that the week prior next host week. We are always learning new and better ways.
We are all blessed to be part of Interfaith Hospitality Network and work together with such nice families. First Pres and Congregation Children of Israel (CCI) is blessed with compassionate, caring, generous, fun volunteers! It is going to be a good week. We may have bugs to work out--let us know when things need to be tweaked please. Stay tuned for the rest of the IHN week.
God Bless you one and all.

IHN Sunday, January 12, 2014
Sunday comes early. The take-down crew of Roger, Carmen, Ed (back from overnight host duties on Fri), Alicia, John, Katherine, Sarah, Steven and Mac, Denise, Kitty D and Gail who set up and brought the week's snacks and breakfast food was back in Athens from her home in Atlanta and came to help!
David and Bruce were up and helping in moving things as well. We have such great volunteers. Jill had done a lot the night before to get ready. As we were moving things from their room, Christopher was burrowing into his bed! It's hard to get up early when you're 14 (or 71 actually).
Everyone in this crew was experienced and it went very well. The sofa was moved back to the Pit, The laundry was put into large bags for Ann, Debbie and Sarah to pick up today. Blinds were taken from the windows and stored for next time. IHN Bins were put into the hall with the 16 beds all awaiting the truck. The refrigerator was cleaned out and put back into order for the staff who shares with us with nary a complaint (or at least out-loud) :)
The Sunday School rooms were re-set to order, with the help of photos Candice had taken, and the good work of Katherine, Sarah, Mac and Steven who know just how things are supposed to go.
There was a bit of time to visit and just as the truck arrived to pick up the IHN things, Denise and Kitty D were off with the van to take the guests to the Day Center.
Pete, an able IHN volunteer, was waiting with a truck and U-haul trailer to take Jill and her family to Buford to pick up their furniture and things (to the relief of Bill who had worried about their very empty apartment.) Some wonderful volunteers had brought dishes this week, and other things have been coming in for them.
It has been a wonderful week. We were able to see Christine, Belinda, Melissa and Dorothy on their last night with IHN and wish them well as they moved into their very own trailer.
Jill, who is admirably very neat and very organized wisely asked to stay at Emmanuel, the next host church, until Thursday so she can get everything arranged, stored, put away, fixed just right before she and the boys move in. Also they need two beds which are available from IHN storage next week.
It was sad to tell them "so-long". They are a wonderful family and have won the hearts of all of us. We always are blessed by hosting and this week was no exception.
THANKS to all of you who helped to make this week go so smoothly. Mark your calendar and save the dates: Our next host week will be March 23 - 30, 2014. Hope to see you then.

IHN, Saturday January 11, 2014
Kitty K. and Ed got the morning started and everyone moving. Saturday is always a special day during the First Pres IHN host week. Everyone gets to sleep a little later. Then, it's up to Fellowship Hall for a fabulous Darryl Magrino breakfast! Anything you could want for breakfast--including omelets or eggs cooked to order. What a treat! Both the guests and the volunteers love it. What a gift from Darryl, thanks from one and all.
Erik was the morning van driver again--after doing his usual great job during the week as van coordinator, making sure all the drivers knew exactly where to be when. And the IHN staff has been wonderful about making sure the van has plenty of gas...which helps a lot.
Bill Flatt was once again the smiling evening van driver, and he went to the Day Center early so he could take Jill, Christopher and Ethan to pick up their very own apartment key! It was a big moment and Bill got to be there as the boys saw their soon-to-be-home for the first time. There is a brand new refrigerator and oven, new carpeting and fresh paint everywhere. Jill was thrilled. She has worked hard for this day. And kudos to the IHN staff for working with her to make this happen.
They then came to FPC to chill for a bit. Kitty was On Site/On Call coordinator, and after the sheets were changed for the hosts, an inventory was taken of all the IHN things.
Before long evening hosts Molly and Ben were there with their precious Crawford. They got the table set and welcomed Ethelyn and the dinner. The boys were thrilled to see Pizza (3 different kinds) along with a big platter of chicken strips, a huge tossed salad and big chocolate chunk cookies which they enjoyed with ice cream left over from another evening. Once again our meal providers outdid themselves! Jill packaged up chicken strips for Sunday, and there was enough pizza left to take to the Day Center for a treat as well.
Overnight host pros Bruce and David were there (David's third volunteer job this week, so he certainly knows his way around!).
It was a quiet night, and the last one for Jill and family at First Presbyterian. Thanks to all for a very good day.

IHN, Friday January 10, 2014
After the excitement of Thursday night Lynn and Nancy were up and ready to go on Friday morning. They got all the morning chores done, and everyone up and ready for the van.
Jim McDonald (who also was part of the Thursday night fire alarm situation) was there to drive the van...nothing scares off our volunteers!
Madeline, fresh from being out of town, was the Friday On Site/On Call Coordinator and got the beds changed in the host room, and made sure all was in proper order for the evening.
Bill brought the guests in the afternoon and was greeted by Madeline.
Evening Hosts were Dianne and Smith. Dianne has written today to say how much they enjoyed visiting with Jill and the boys. They are such a nice family--and everyone has become quite fond of them. Dianne also said "only at IHN can you meet the Mayor spending the night"! Thanks again Nancy! and everyone else who spends the night. We appreciate non-Mayors just as much and there are a lot more of you.
Jeannie and Roger brought dinner and once again it hit the spot. They had pulled pork and buns, baked beans, coleslaw and a delicious pie. What a treat for everyone.
Overnight hosts were Kitty K and Ed, and since they are pros at this all was well. Friday night had no excitement, which is actually a good thing. Too much adrenaline can be hard on the body (at least for us older folks)
THANKS to all our wonderful volunteers.

IHN, Thursday January 9, 2014
Thursday brought higher temperatures to Athens...just as Christopher and Ethan have new jackets and new long underwear for cold winter days!
John and Sara are early risers and had coffee and cereal before the family got up. They reported a good evening. Chuck was back to drive the morning Van again and all went like clock-work.
Sara did double duty and was doing laundry very early on Thursday morning. Thanks!
Susan was the On Site/On Call Coordinator and had the beds ready with clean sheets and mints for the overnight hosts. Tom served once again as the evening van driver--we have such wonderful volunteers to do multiple days and multiple duties.
Susan greeted the evening hosts Steve and Tanna. Dinner was brought by Jessica and Sue--and what a delicious dinner it was! Beef Stew (a perfect winter dinner) along with a green salad, garlic bread and apple pie with ice cream...what more could you want?
Steve and Tanna were joined by Nancy who came early for her overnight duties. They all enjoyed talking with Jill and with one another. Soon the other overnight host Lynn joined in. Happy and Steve checked all the doors, which were secure and everyone was settled in for the night.
BUT...the nice was not over. Around 10 the fire alarm went off--if you are reading this, you probably heard it wherever you were last night. It is LOUD! That's a good thing, no one sleeps through it. There was no fire--thankfully.
Lynn called me, but my cell phone was off (we went to a concert & I didn't want it to BARK (my ring tone) in the middle of a piano sonata) She called Denise, who was johnny on the spot. She called Roger (his cell phone was on the charger in another room) and Glenn, who answered immediately.
Soon the fire department arrived. They must have been surprised to find their Mayor there at the church! Bet they were glad they made a timely response; I feel sure they always do!
When Denise arrived she found the fire department, Glenn, Jim, Lynn, Nancy, Jill, Christopher & Ethan outside to get away from the shrieking alarm. Christopher and Ethan were bundled in blankets.
Soon, the alarm was turned off.
The culprit was a broken pipe in the sprinkler system in the lower garage, where water was pouring out...much better than fire.
While all this was happening the boys discovered Nancy is the Mayor and were very impressed and very curious. They asked her all sorts of questions, including whether she had a guard with her at all times (no) and if she had a driver (no). So it was a great civic lesson, as well as an excellent fire and emergency drill. Everyone did their part exactly right, no one panicked. All were safe and I'm sure all slept well Thursday night.
THANKS to Lynn, Nancy, Glenn, Denise, Jim and the firefighters for everything you did! And to Jill and the boys for hanging in there--and making the best of an un-quiet evening.

Another chilly morning at First Pres--and everywhere else in Georgia. Elaine and Laura got the morning started. They didn't have to go far to work, just down the hall. There are lots of benefits to being an IHN volunteer.
Chuck was the Van driver and got the boys to school after a "non-snow but plenty cold" closed day yesterday. Jill went to the Day Center as her work day started later. She and I had an enjoyable morning running errands before I dropped her at her clients for her work day.
In the afternoon Tom was the Van driver and Terry the On Site/On Call Coordinator. Terry got the beds made and everything organized to welcome Jill and her family back to FPC. He and the evening hosts set the table and all was well.
By the time Judy and Jim arrived with dinner everyone was there, including the Evening hosts David (again) and Ben, and the room was ringing with music. Christopher on the piano and Ethan playing his trumpet. Overnight hosts Sara and John joined in the festivities and the good food before heading off to make music with the choir.
Dinner was scrumptious, baked chicken, corn, a sweet potato casserole, rolls and cookies for dessert. Everyone enjoyed it very much.
The overnight was quiet, just like we like it. John says "the beds are much better than the old cots!". Another good aspect of overnight hosting.

IHN, Tuesday January 7, 2014
Mary and Laura got up on this frigid morning, and were thankful the church had heat! They thought they were going to spend the day in the church--locked in! In case that happens to you...if you are trying to get out the back door and can't, look to your left on the wall and push the small green (I think) square box that says "Push to Exit". This is a relatively new security system that is operative anytime the Weekday School is in session. Sorry we didn't give you a heads up Mary--And we are glad your car started - after advice from Bob via phone. That's what happens when he stays home to watch the football game.
Erik was the last minute van driver, always count on him in a pinch! The Clarke County Schools were closed but Jill had to go to work. The boys spent the day at the Day Center (studying I am sure) They both play musical instruments and have lots of interests and talents, so if it wasn't school books I'm sure they put the time to good use.
Barb came to the church this morning and picked up the dirty sheets and towels and took them home to wash.
Denise was the Tuesday On-Site/On-Call Coordinator today, along with other roles!
Kitty picked up Jill from work this afternoon, so she didn't have to wait for the bus in the cold, cold weather. When everyone got to the church Denise and Sydney were there and had dinner almost ready. Erika and Joe had prepared a delicious lasagna which was perfect for the weather. Not only was it enjoyed tonight, but Jill put some into freezer bags and will have them all ready to start life in her new apartment, which should be by early next week.
Sydney had a big salad, which was a big hit along with warm french bread, and for dessert there were cookies and apple slices with a brickle dip. Yum!!
Carol and Winston, the evening hosts enjoyed the dinner too as well as catching up with Jill.
Denise had a bonus of dinner because she stayed and took Jill for a 6 pm doctor's appointment and got back before too much time passed. Jill got a good report! Thanks to everyone for making that tight schedule work.
Denise went home but wasn't finished...see the message she sent:
As the onsite coordinator, your heart skips a beat when the phone rings and you see First Presbyterian on the caller ID. Fortunately, the only problem was that I had left with the door keys to the church in my pocket!
As I drove back to the church, I wondered why evening host Carol had called my home phone rather than my cell. That mystery was solved when I got to the church and learned the door to the host room had accidentally closed--and locked! Although overnight hosts Laura and Elaine both have their own sets of keys because of their work with the church, when the door closed their keys were inside!
All was fine once I returned with keys in hand!
Denise--thanks for all you did!! Easy mistake to leave those keys in your pocket, as you suggested we will get one of those curly bracelet key rings. Just so everyone knows, I (Kitty) also get a set of keys during our host week so if the set at the church gets gone, we don't have to call in Roger--as we had to do the first week. We learn something each time!
Overnight hosts were Elaine and Laura--who had already spent the day at their First Presbyterian jobs, and then returned for the night! What wonderful employees they are...we are grateful.
Sweet dreams with visions of snowflakes dancing in your heads.

IHN, Monday January 6, 2014 -- part two!
My mind has frozen...that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I left out Gail Wilfong's great snacks and breakfast food on the Sunday post.
Now I have left out three important folks on the Monday post. Erik was the On-Site/On-Call Coordinator for Monday and was at the church by 4:30. He stripped the host beds and put on new sheets for the new Overnight hosts--along with the mints on their pillows of course.
He welcomed the evening hosts Terry Nestor and Sarah Lawrence who made our guests feel right at home, put out the food and enjoyed it as well! That's the big benefit of being an evening host--good food you don't have to cook yourself!
Also there was concern about the boys lack of warm jackets and gloves. Bless Terry and Laura for sharing what they were wearing! How kind of you, it was appreciated. I have found out some things about that. The boys have jackets but need blue jackets for school and theirs are different.
On Wednesday morning we're going to take Jill shopping for a warmer coat for her, and some long underwear for the boys. The IHN staff has vouchers for them. We will make sure all have the warm clothing they need. Thanks for caring!!
